Scroll house

The front of a site where the scroll builds the house, then walks up to it. For VELA, houses on a lagoon. On the empty lot the house rises part by part as a white model, takes on its stone, oak and glass, the palms go in, and the still becomes real footage walking up to the house. On the way the view closes in on the upper window, outlines it, measures it and names what it is made of, then carries on round the front. Scrolling back takes it apart again.

SCROLL

How it behaves

  • The frame stays put while the page scrolls, so the scroll runs the film.
  • The chapters change at the foot as it goes: design, precision, craft, arrival.
  • The film follows the scroll with a little weight, never ahead of it.

How it is made

  • A real house, cut from the first frame of the footage into the parts it is built from.
  • The window is tracked through the footage frame by frame, and the close-up is cut from the 4K original.
  • The film is 180 stills drawn on a canvas, the two nearest the scroll blended, so it moves smoothly on every phone.
  • The stills load coarse first and fill in, so the whole scroll works within the first second.
